Next Halloween I am going as someone I don't like.

Actually, I am really pretty upset. Someone in my office came over to console me as soon as she knew.

"I'm sorry about your hero killing himself."

The funny thing is, as much as I loved his work, he was never a hero. I loved his writing, and even though his writing was fundamentally linked with who he was, I still thought he was a terrible person.

Weird. Was he a "hero"?

I don't know joe. As he got older I think he became more honest and kind. That's probably what killed him. If you read the book about Clinton vs. Bush1 which I think had different titles wherever you read it in the world you can see in thompson a kind of self concousness not present in his earlier writing which is increadably endearing and having seen this growth I think that yes joe, there is a hunter s. thompson clause. And he is a hero.
